Physiotherapy - A General Overview
Physiotherapy or Physical Therapy has been a recognized medical discipline for over 100 years.
Physiotherapists are university trained health professionals. In North America, Physiotherapy schools are usually in the Faculty of Medicine or Allied Health Sciences.

Physiotherapy uses physical means of treatment to relieve pain and restore movement. Methods include massage, manual therapy (hands-on), electrotherapy (use of electrical current), cold, heat, water, exercise and acupuncture.

Physiotherapists treat patients all of ages- from birth to 100+.

Principles of Treatment

Goals of treatment will differ depending on the type of physical problem, medical condition or injury being treated.
Some people will be involved with physiotherapy programs to assist them in getting back to work after an injury.
Others may have to adjust to a sudden change in their physical ability-such as that caused by a stroke, amputation, or a spinal cord injury.

Persons born with congenital (event at birth) conditions such as cerebral palsy, spinal bifida or scoliosis may need periodic management by a physiotherapist to achieve and maintain their optional level of function throughout the years.

Physiotherapists also work within a pain management team, assisting people with persistent (chronic) pain symptoms to resume a more active lifestyle.
Some causes of pain problems include injuries sustained in car accidents, slip and falls, work injuries and fibromyalgia.

The experienced physiotherapists at The Downtown Clinic are all graduates of Canadian universities and continue to be involved in post graduate training.

The Clinic is also a clinical placement site for physiotherapy students at the University of Western Ontario (UWO).

Children:
As parents, we remain concerned about our children achieving appropriate development milestones, and are often worried about physical conditions that seem to be dismissed by some professionals.
A session with one of the physiotherapists at the Clinic will assist you in better understanding and managing these physical concerns. Wry neck, floppy baby syndrome, cerebral palsy, hemi-paresis, club-feet, congenital amputations are some of the conditions often seen.

Fitness for Everyone
The importance of physical activity and conditioning regardless of age or medical problem is an important part of ‘Wellness’. This individually designed program will incorporate your own goals, needs and lifestyle into a safe and effective physical strengthening routine, allowing you to maintain or enhance your current physical activity.

Gardening
Working in the garden is exercise! But when stiff joints and sore muscles are strained and make the work difficult and painful, gardening activities are no longer fun.
There are many products and gardening tools on the market today that can make gardening enjoyable again. A visit with your physiotherapist will assess your work ‘technique’, provide exercises to improve you strength and balance and help you return to one of your favourite outdoor ‘sports’.

Home, Fitness Club, Work and Hospital Visits
Physiotherapists and other Clinic staff members can treat or consult with patients ‘wherever’ they are in the community.

Medico-Legal or Disability Assessments
Providing realistic and objective information on a patient’ ability to return to their pre-morbid condition (the condition they were in before the trauma or event), can assist with resolution of personal injury or disability claims.

Musician's injuries:
Musicians are very prone to injury. Even experienced musicians are at high risk for developing repetitive strain injuries and postural problems as a result of long hours of practice- often with a compromised playing style. With a little patience, ’behavioural modification’ and attention paid to resolving muscle imbalances, the physiotherapist can assist the musician return to intense playing without pain.

Osteoporosis Program
Osteoporosis means ‘porous bone’ and is a disease where the bone loses its density and becomes fragile.
The Osteoporosis Program provides preventative strategies for those at risk as well as continuous rehabilitation for people diagnosed with osteoporosis who may have fractures.

Pain Management
Pain is a signal- that something does not feel right in our body. By understanding both the physical and emotional dimensions of pain, pain can better be controlled and improved function achieved.
Programs and treatment is based on our current understanding of physiology, anatomy and pharmacology.
A special chronic pain program of The Downtown Clinic is called Encompass. Realistic treatment foals and time lines are developed, assisting the patient in returning to a more productive lifestyle/

Running
Running or jogging is a great cardio-vascular (fitness) exercise but takes its toll on many joints and muscles. Runners must be ‘in shape’ to run so that they do not injure themselves.
Many do not realize the stress and strain made on many muscles who now have to work ‘together’ to provide the strength and endurance needed for this activity.
The physiotherapists at The Downtown Clinic are able to assess muscle weakness (hips, low back are the main culprits) discuss the use of orthotics and proper shoe-wear and help you develop a graduated program of stretching, strengthening and endurance training.
Ensuring you can stay on your feet – and run- without any discomfort will make your exercise program both beneficial and enjoyable.

Seating & Mobility:
Maintaining your independence often means adapting to ‘change’. Often the use of a cane, walker or wheelchair may help you to achieve better function.
This comprehensive, individualized, physiotherapy –based program will assess your physical abilities and make treatment suggestions. The physiotherapist can also recommend and provide you information on obtaining these devices.

Tempero-Mandibular Joint (TMJ ) Program
The tempero-mandibular joint is located between the temporal bone on the side of your skull (yours upper jaw) and the upper part of the mandible bone (your lower jaw).Tempero-mandibular (TMJ) joint or tempero-mandibular dysfunction (TMD) refers to problems, and usually pain with the TMJ and the muscles in the face and neck. People with TMD may experience headaches, neck pain and/ or stiffness, a tired or tight feeling in the jaw and even at times problems beyond (referred) the TMJ itself, i.e. into the teeth.
TMJ is often a component of pain resultant from whiplash-type accidents or other neck pain.
A complete assessment of the jaw and neck includes obtaining information on postural alignment and muscle imbalances. The use of ultra-sound, TENS, heat and exercises will assist with resolution of symptoms.

Vestibular Rehabilitation
Vertigo, dizziness and loss of balance have many different causes and severely interfere with daily function and safety.
Some of the reasons for ‘vertigo’ include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), a viral infection causing vestibular neuronitis, labrynthitis, Meniere’s disease, or as a result of a ‘head injury’.
Vestibular rehabilitation can help stop your world spinning and get your balance back.
