Well-being
is a state of mind and body where the impact of one upon the other
is actively managed; and where you thrive within your accepted
limitations and abilities.
If you are to maintain your well-being throughout your life, you
have to take charge
of yourself. The Downtown Clinic is where you can start."
Our
Mission Statement was created in 1982. It continues to describe
the way our encompassing treatment programs and services are extended
to our patients.
As a health professional with an appreciation of the significant
changes patients often have to make ‘adjust' to a compromised
lifestyle (because of injury, illness, disease), Gloria has continued
to integrate a goal setting approach into all treatment programs.
PGAP (Progressive Goal Attainment Program) has become a successful
program designed to help individuals re-integrate into their former
life roles. Gloria has attended this course and is also a PGAP
(www.PDP-PGAP.com)
provider.
Many years of clinical practice in the area of pain management
encouraged Gloria to return to university. In 2002 she received
a Master of Science (M.Sc.) Degree from UWO.
Her thesis examined changes in ‘position sense’ in
patients with chronic neck pain (Cervico-cephalic Kinaesthesia
in Subjects with Chronic Neck Pain).
This topic continues to challenge Gloria and her colleagues. It
is now better recognized that after cervical (neck) trauma (previously
thought of as only injury to the soft tissue structures), there
is often other associated injury. The effects of trauma are often
associated with signs and symptoms suggestive of Mild Traumatic
Brain Injury- and include vestibular (balance) and visual changes,
tinnitus (ringing in the ears) as well as memory and concentration
difficulties.
An enthusiastic speaker, educator and advocate for the chronic
pain patient, Gloria continues to be a mentor to her physiotherapy
colleagues, in the area of pain assessment and treatment programs.
Sharon
has been associated with The Downtown Clinic for more than 20
years. Her role is that of an educational counselor assisting
with the assessment and management of patients who are having
difficulties adjusting to a lifestyle altered by pain or disability.
Sharon works with the Encompass Team at intake. She also provides
individual and group sessions for patients - offering new strategies
and insights in dealing with a changed lifestyle. Stress management
techniques or relaxation training are often integrated into the
counselling sessions.
Sharon was previously a career counselor at Fanshawe College as
well as a mental health provider.
She is also a certified PGAP (Progressive Goal Attainment Program)
provider.
